What to Know About Hospice Care
Comfort-Focused Care
Hospice focuses on comfort and quality of life rather than curative treatment. It is available to patients with a terminal diagnosis and a prognosis of six months or less if the illness runs its natural course.
Medicare Coverage
Medicare Part A covers hospice care when a doctor certifies the patient is terminally ill. The Medicare Hospice Benefit covers physician services, nursing care, medications for symptom control, and family counseling.
Interdisciplinary Team
Hospice care is delivered by a team of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and trained volunteers. Services are provided wherever the patient calls home — a private residence, nursing facility, or inpatient hospice unit.
